Protein is everywhere right now, and for many women, the conversation has become more confusing than helpful.
The real question is not whether protein matters, it is how much you actually need and how to make it work in your day without overthinking it.
Why protein matters more after 40
As you get into your 30’s, your body becomes less efficient at maintaining muscle, and muscle plays a key role in metabolism, strength, recovery, and overall function. Without enough protein, it becomes much harder to preserve that muscle, especially if you are active.
How much protein do you actually need
Research supports a range of about 1.2 to 2.2 grams per kilogram of body weight. For most active women over 40, a simpler approach is aiming for roughly 1 gram per pound of your goal body weight. This supports muscle maintenance and recovery without overcomplicating things.
Most women overcomplicate this part.

What happens if you don’t get enough
When protein intake is too low, recovery slows, energy dips, hunger increases, and over time you may lose lean muscle. This makes both fat loss and strength progress more difficult.
Do you need protein everything
You do not need specialty products to meet your needs. Protein Popcorn. Protein Ramen. No. What matters most is consistency.
Why balance still matters
Protein is one piece of the puzzle. Carbohydrates support energy and performance. Fats support hormones and overall health.
What a simple day could look like
This might be eggs & cottage cheese, or Greek yogurt at breakfast, a protein source like chicken or fish at lunch, and a balanced dinner. It does not need to be perfect, just repeatable.
