“I feel off… but I don’t know why.”
That is how most conversations start. You’re still showing up. You’re working out, trying to eat well, doing your best to stay consistent, but your body feels different. Less predictable. Harder to manage. And no one really explains why.
What is perimenopause
Perimenopause is the transition phase leading up to menopause, and it can begin years before your cycle fully stops. What most people do not explain clearly is that your hormones are not simply declining, they are fluctuating. Estrogen and progesterone can rise and fall from month to month, sometimes even week to week, which is exactly why one month you feel steady and the next everything feels harder.
Common symptoms of perimenopause
This is where many women start to notice changes that feel confusing or frustrating. Sleep becomes disrupted or lighter. Mood can shift more quickly. You might feel more irritable, more anxious, or struggle with focus. Energy drops, recovery takes longer, and cravings feel stronger. Fat storage may also start to shift, often showing up more around the midsection. And no, it is not in your head.
Why your body feels different after 40
There is more happening than hormones alone. Muscle mass naturally declines with age, especially if it is not being actively maintained, and muscle plays a key role in metabolism, recovery, and overall function. At the same time, stress tends to be higher, sleep is often less consistent, and life is full. All of this reduces your margin for error, which is why the habits that used to “kind of work” no longer feel effective.
Why what used to work is not working anymore
This is where frustration builds. You are doing what you used to do, maybe even trying harder, but now late nights hit harder, stress accumulates faster, under eating backfires more quickly, and a “winging it” approach stops working altogether. Your body is not broken, it just requires more intention.
Most women overcomplicate this part.
If you’re reading this and thinking “this is exactly me, but I don’t know where to start,” that’s completely normal.

What actually helps
The fundamentals have not changed, but how you apply them matters more now. Strength training becomes essential to maintain and build muscle. Protein intake needs to support recovery. Nutrition needs to be balanced, not restrictive, including carbohydrates for energy. Sleep and recovery matter more than ever, and consistency becomes the thing that drives results.
If your body feels different right now, it is not a sign that you are failing. It is simply a sign that your approach needs to evolve.
