Laura did not expect this.
She was consistent. She worked out. She paid attention to what she ate. She was not someone starting from scratch, and for the most part, she felt like she had a handle on things.
Then something shifted.
At first it was subtle. She started waking up more during the night, not fully awake, but enough that she never felt fully rested the next day. Then came the hot flashes, random and unpredictable, always showing up at the worst possible times. And then the scale stopped moving. Not slowly, not gradually, it just stopped, no matter how hard she worked.
So she tightened things up. Ate a little less. Added more cardio. Tried harder.
And that is when things got worse.
Her energy dropped. Her sleep got worse. Her mood became harder to manage. Some weeks she felt like herself. Other weeks she felt anxious, irritable, and honestly a little disconnected.
She started forgetting words mid sentence. Walking into rooms and not remembering why she was there. And the belly fat, that one felt personal.
Nothing was working the way it used to.
At some point, she had the thought most women have but do not say out loud.
Maybe this is just what happens now.
But that is not the full story.
If you want to understand what is actually happening in your body during this phase, start here.
Because perimenopause is not just about hormones declining. It’s about hormones fluctuating. At the same time, muscle mass is declining, recovery is changing, stress is higher, and sleep is lighter.
So the same habits that worked before stop being enough.
For Laura, the shift was not about doing more. It was about doing things differently. Strength training with intention. Eating enough protein. Fueling properly. And most importantly, stopping the constant guessing.
Things did not change overnight. But they started to make sense again.
If any part of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. And more importantly, you’re not stuck.
